About Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative (BVMI):
BVMI helps address the healthcare affordability crisis for low-income, uninsured, working adults. Established in 2009 in Hackensack, BVMI is a Volunteers in Medicine clinic that provides free healthcare for working uninsured adults in Bergen County who earn up to 250% of Federal Poverty Guidelines. Experts estimate that 40,000 Bergen County adults fall into that category. Currently, BVMI serves about 1,000 patients. BVMI’s second clinic at Unity Health Partnership in Garfield is expected to open in late 2025 and will reach more uninsured providing free healthcare for up to 1,500 patients in southern Bergen County.
