Earth Day, go paperless

Earth Day is a reminder of the importance of being environmentally responsible and taking care of our planet (the place we call home). This year, join us in celebrating and evaluating ways we all can be more eco-friendly in our daily lives. If you haven’t done much to improve in this area, this spring choose just two areas to focus on: energy savings/efficiency and reducing paper consumption.

Reducing Paper Consumption
Enroll In Online & Mobile Banking: Setting up your bank accounts online allows you to go to bank from anywhere and anytime, no paperwork needed or extra bank trips (saving gas as well).
Switch To E-statements: Instead of receiving your Spencer statements by mail each month, elect to receive them online in electronic format. Your online statement will look the same and will include images of your paid checks. Log into your Spencer account to choose this option and get started.
Set Up Digital Payments With Bill Pay & Zelle: Set up automatic payments with Bill Pay, a service that allows you to schedule and make payments for your bills automatically. It helps save time, avoid late fees and manage your finances effectively. Also, use Zelle to easily send or receive money from friends and family. No checks needed.
Switch To Digital Invoicing & Use QuickBooks To Automate Accounts Payable: If you own a business, switch to digital invoicing and record-keeping systems. This is a highly effective way for businesses to go eco-friendly while improving efficiency.
Use Electronic Card Management: Using electronic card management through mobile or online banking (instead of traditional methods) simplifies card management and supports eco-friendly, sustainable and efficient financial practices.

Energy Savings & Efficiency
Adjust Thermostats: You can save roughly 10% annually on heating and cooling bills by shifting your thermostat 7°–10°F for 8 hours a day. Remember to also keep windows closed during the day to prevent heat and humidity from entering (reducing the need for AC). Use ceiling fans to feel a bit cooler.
Unplug Devices: Idle electronics can account for up to 10% of electricity bills; use smart power strips to turn off multiple devices at once (cable boxes, TVs, gaming consoles, chargers, small kitchen appliances, etc.)
Use LED Lighting: Swap incandescent bulbs for LED lights that are highly energy-efficient, using up to 90% less energy (and lasting up to 25 times longer, also reduces electricity bills).
Upgrade To Energy Star Appliances: Upgrading to ENERGY STAR appliances can lower utility bills and reduce emissions. Visit energystar.gov online to find local incentives.
Cold Water Wash: Washing clothes in cold water is a highly effective eco-friendly practice that reduces energy consumption by up to 90%. Also, remember to reduce overall water usage as well (especially with all bathroom activities).
Use Natural Light (Daylighting): Open blinds and curtains to harness natural light during the day and reduce the need for artificial lighting. This is a free resource that directly lowers electricity bills and extends the lifespan of your light bulbs.
Shorten Shower Time: Cutting just a few minutes off your daily shower can significantly reduce water and energy use.

This spring let’s refresh our habits and rethink how we care for our planet. By setting some time aside and making changes in these two areas, both individuals and businesses alike can contribute to a cleaner, greener tomorrow!
